Japanese: 観音経 - かんのんぎょう

A Buddhist scripture. This is a volume containing the 25th chapter of the Lotus Sutra, "The Universal Gate of the Bodhisattva Kannon." The Chinese translations of the prose by Kumarajiva and the verse by Janakuta are widely recited in China and Japan. It teaches that Kannon uses supernatural powers to teach people and transforms himself into various forms to save them. It teaches that if one remembers Kannon and chants her name, one can escape from any hardship, and encourages people to have faith in Kannon. Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese translations remain, but there are considerable differences in the verse. Fragments of copies in Uighur, Mongolian, and Turkish languages have also been discovered, indicating the widespread circulation of this book.

仏教経典。『法華経』のなかの第 25章「観世音菩薩普門品」を別出して1巻としたもの。鳩摩羅什が散文を，闍那崛多が韻文を漢訳したものを合せたものが，中国，日本で広く読誦されている。観世音菩薩が神通力をもって教えを示し，種々に身を変えて人々を救済することを説く。観音を心に念じその名を称えれば，いかなる苦難からも逃れることができることを説いて，観音を信仰すべきことをすすめている。梵本，チベット語訳，漢訳が現存するが，韻文の部分にはかなりの相違がみられる。ウイグル文，蒙古文，トルコ文などで書写されたものの断片も発見されており，本書の流布の広さが知られる。
