Sarcophagus is a stone coffin for burying the dead. In ancient Greece and Rome, the corpse was said to have been placed in a stone coffin for 40 days until it decayed and disappeared, but the practice of placing the dead in stone or terracotta coffins and burying them had already been practiced by Tutankhamun in the New Kingdom of Egypt, and was probably a way to bury high-ranking people with great care. Many coffins have carvings or paintings on the lid or all four sides. In Japan, box-shaped stone coffins were used during the Yayoi period, and split bamboo-shaped, boat-shaped, house-shaped, and long-box-shaped stone coffins were used during the Kofun period.
