A perennial plant of the Liliaceae family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). It is a complex species consisting of homo- and heteropolyploids with different combinations of chromosomes A and B genomes, and its external morphology is highly variable. The bulbs are ovoid or elliptical, covered with a black-brown outer skin. The leaves grow above ground twice, in early spring and after the flowering season in July, and are oblanceolate linear, concave on the upper surface, soft and thick. Sometimes there are no leaves during the flowering season. The flower stalk is upright, 30-50 cm tall, and bears numerous pale purple flowers facing upward in racemes. It grows in southwestern Hokkaido, and in sunny fields and roadsides from Honshu to Okinawa, and is distributed from the Korean Peninsula to China. [Akira Kono March 20, 2019] It can be found in sunny fields and roadsides, and from August to October, it produces spikes of small pink-purple flowers. The flowers open one after the other from the bottom to the top of the inflorescence. ©Shogakukan Photo by Masatoshi Hirose "> Tsurubo Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
