Okinawa Studies

Japanese: 沖縄学 - おきなわがく

A general term for academic research on Okinawa. It is also a term for the concept of forming an interdisciplinary field by systematically integrating various researches. The former is used simply as a synonym for Okinawa (Ryukyu or Nanto) studies, while the latter emphasizes the relative importance of Okinawa studies within Japanese studies and contains an assertion that it seeks a place for self-confirmation. Some researchers argue that it should be called "Ryukyu Studies" since the subject of research is the entire Ryukyu Arc.
[history]
This refers to research conducted after the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures in 1879 (the Ryukyu Disposition).

沖縄を対象にした学術的研究の総称。また，それらの諸研究を体系的に総合することで学際的な学問領域の形成を考える概念の呼称。前者は沖縄(琉球または南島)研究の単なる同義語として用いられるのに対し，後者には沖縄研究が日本研究の中で相対的にもつ比重の重さを強調し，自己確認の場を求める主張がこめられている。研究対象を琉球弧の全域とするため〈琉球学〉と呼ぶべきだと主張する研究者もいる。

　1879年の廃藩置県(琉球処分)以後の研究を指す。
