…Excavations at Paleolithic cave sites in France. In 1864, E. Lartet (1801-71) and H. Christie discovered three layers of artifacts stacked on top of each other in the Laugerie-Haute cave in the Vézère River Valley in southern France. The information provided by the subsequent confirmation of many stratigraphic facts, combined with the results of research on excavated artifacts, led to the establishment of a chronology of Paleolithic cultures in Europe in the second half of the 19th century. …
