The flowers are boat-shaped and hang down from the end of the pedicel, and when the ripe fruit is touched, it suddenly bursts open and scatters seeds. The genus name Impatiens means "unbearable." It is distributed throughout Japan, as well as Korea and northeastern China. The stems are 50-80 cm tall, well-branched, and have swollen nodes. The leaves are alternate, with petioles 1-4.5 cm long and ovate blades 6-14 cm long and circularly serrated.
