In 16th century Germany and Flanders, the stylistic contradiction between the Gothic tradition and the newly introduced Italian Renaissance led to interesting distortions in the forms. Daniel Hopfer (c. 1470-1536) is a typical example. The conflict between Catholics and Protestants was also fought through satirical prints, as seen in the radical anti-Catholic works of L. Cranach.

...The practice of protecting metals with a type of wax and then decorating them with acid has been practiced since the 14th century, but it was not always copper. When etching was first attempted in Augsburg around 1500 in the metalworking workshop of Daniel Hopfer (c. 1470-1536), it was iron plates that were corroded, and etchings by Dürer, Altdorfer, Augustin Hirschvogel (c. 1503-53), Burgkmair, and others all used iron plates. In the 1520s, L. van Leyden of the Netherlands began etching copper plates, and by the mid-16th century it had spread throughout Europe. ...
