Noviciado was founded in 1580 (Tensho 8) in Usuki, Bungo Province, by Jesuit Visitor to the East Indies Valignano. The original word was Portuguese, noviciado. Noviciados were made up of Japanese and European novitiates from the seminary. After completing a two-year novitiate devoted to monastic life, including the spiritual exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, meditation, and spiritual reading, they took three vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and entered the Collegio in Funai, Bungo Province. They moved due to war and persecution, and their final destination was Nagasaki, where they remained until 1614 (Keicho 19). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
