…In response to these two functions, two types of sonatas emerged: the church sonata (sonata da chiesa) and the chamber sonata (sonata da camera). These names originated with the collection of twelve pieces by Tarquinio Merula (1594/95-1665) entitled Canzona, or Sonatas and Concertatas for Church and Chamber (published in 1637), but each eventually came to refer to a sonata with a specific movement structure and style. Of particular importance was the church sonata, originally performed in churches for mass and other religious services, which gradually streamlined the canzona-style multi-part structure to a four-movement structure with contrasting styles: slow-fast-slow-fast.

From "Trio Sonata"

...This was established when the Renaissance ensemble canzona (canzone) was baptized with the new principle of monody. In the early Baroque period, Gabrieli (G. Gabrieli), Salomone de Rossi (c. 1570-c. 1630), and Tarquinio Merula (c. 1594-1665) left works. It was Corelli who brought the trio sonata to completion, and his two church sonatas (1681, 1689) and chamber sonatas (1685, 1700) are particularly important.
