…From the 3rd century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century BC, it occupied and annexed the border areas and Greek colonies with neighboring countries, absorbing Hellenistic culture and becoming a powerful state. However, seeing the rise of Rome, Nicomedes IV bequeathed the kingdom to the Romans in 74 BC, and the province of Bithynia-Pontus was established here under the leadership of Pompey. During the Imperial period, it was transferred from the jurisdiction of the Senate to the direct control of the emperor because of its important role in inland trade with the East and maritime trade with the Black Sea coast. …
