Japanese: ツノマタ(角又) - ツノマタ（英語表記）Chondrus ocellatus Holmes

A marine red alga that is used as a source of glue, the body is flattened, forked, and fan-shaped. It grows on rocks in the lower intertidal zone along the coasts of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Most grow to a height of around 10 cm, but some grow to over 30 cm. The sand-grain-like black spots on the surface of the body are clusters of tetrasporangia, and the horseshoe-shaped black spots are carpoids containing carpospores. Bodies with the former are sporophytes, and bodies with the latter are gametophytes. Similar species include C. verrucosa Mikami (illustration), which is found in the middle intertidal zone along the Pacific coast of Honshu like the hornwort, C. giganteus Yendo and C. elatus Holmes, which are found in the lower intertidal zone, and C. crispus Stackh., which is found on the coast of the Sea of Japan.

糊料の原藻となる海産の紅藻で，体は扁圧，叉（さ）状に分岐し，全形は扇状となる。日本および朝鮮半島沿岸各地の潮間帯下部の岩上に生育する。高さは10cm内外のものが多いが，ときに30cm以上になるものもある。体の表面の砂粒状の黒点は四分胞子囊の集まったものであり，馬蹄形の黒点は果胞子を含む囊果である。前者をもつ体は胞子体，後者をもつ体は配偶体ということになる。近似の種に，ツノマタと同様に本州太平洋沿岸の潮間帯中部に分布するイボツノマタC.verrucosa Mikami（イラスト），潮間帯下部に分布するオオバツノマタC.giganteus Yendo，コトジツノマタC.elatus Holmesがあり，日本海沿岸にはトチャカC.crispus Stackh.がある。
