A general term for insects of the Hemiptera family, Acanthosomatidae. Sometimes considered a subfamily of the Hemiptera family, the two-segmented tarsus has a long spine on the ventral surface of the prothorax that points toward the head, a flat keel on the ventral surface of the mesonothorax, and a sharp projection on the ventral surface of the third abdominal segment, which overlap at the top and bottom. They are herbivorous and are distributed worldwide with about 180 species, and about 25 species in Japan. Known species include Acanthosoma labiduroides , which has a red tail tip that protrudes like a pair of scissors in the male, Sastragala esakii , which has a yellowish-white heart-shaped small scutellum, and Elasmucha putoni, which is small. In the latter two genera, the adults stay still on the egg mass after laying eggs and protect it until they become second-instar nymphs.
