Himalayan cuckoo - Himalayan cuckoo
A bird of the Lesser Cuckoo order and Lesser Cuckoo family (illustration). Total length is about 33 cm. The upper body and chest are dark gray, and the belly is white with black horizontal stripes. The tail feathers have horizontal white spots. Females also come in a reddish-brown color. They are very similar to cuckoos, but have thicker black stripes on their belly. They breed in the eastern part of the Asian continent and the Himalayas, and migrate from South Asia to northern Australia in winter. They arrive in Japan as summer birds in April and May, and live in deciduous broadleaf forests, red pine forests, and coniferous forests in the low mountain and subalpine zones throughout the country.
