1571‐1629 The fifth king of the Safavid dynasty, and the ruler who restored the dynasty. Reigned 1588-1629. In domestic affairs, he implemented a series of reforms, including the creation of a standing army under the king's direct control, including the kullar slave army made up of Muslim converts from the Caucasus region, rifle and artillery corps (both of which were made up of peasant members), the expansion of the royal territory, and the appointment of officials based on the individual's talent, regardless of background. Through these reforms, he suppressed the power of the Qizilbash and established a royal autocratic system. Externally, he defeated the Uzbeks and the Ottoman Empire, bringing his territory closer to that of Ismail I, and drove the Portuguese from Gamlū (now Bandar Abbas) and the island of Hormuz, greatly enhancing the prestige of the country.
