Tsugishikishikishi

Japanese:
Tsugishikishikishi

A fragment of a collection of poems copied in the mid-Heian period. It was originally a booklet bound in clay. A poem is written in a scattered style on a two-page spread of plain paper, purple, orange, green, indigo, and yellow dyed paper (13.6 cm x 26.6 cm) folded in half. There is a section where the lower part of the poem is copied onto the next two-page spread, and it is called Tsugishikishi because the color of the paper on the left and right sides changes when the poem is made into a hanging scroll. Currently, 36 poems have been confirmed (29 from the Kokinshu, 6 from the Manyoshu, and 1 from an unknown source), and this is a transcription of an unknown collection of poems that contains them. It skillfully mixes simple female handwriting with cursive Manyo-gana, and the scattered writing technique is extremely ingenious. It is said to be the work of Ono no Michikaze, but there is no definite proof, and it is estimated to have been copied in the late 10th century. It is one of the three shikishi, along with "Sunshoan shikishi" and "Masu shikishi."
