This Buddhist temple is located just east of Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Silla, Korea. It is said to have been founded in 634 and is an extremely valuable piece of architecture from the Old Silla period, with magnificent stone towers and other remains. It was made of andesite cut into pieces the size of bricks and stacked together, evoking the influence of Chinese brick pagodas. It is square, with entrances on all four sides, and on either side of each entrance are high reliefs of powerful Vajra wrestlers. It is said to have originally had nine stories, but only three remain today. The eaves are made of stone corbels and get gradually thinner the higher you go, giving it an imposing sense of stability. There are powerful stone carvings of lions on the four corners of the base. [Yukio Beniyama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
