A handsome actor who uses gentle gestures and speech, such as Soga Juro and Kamiya Jihei, and who mainly plays roles in romantic conflicts. Also, someone who plays handsome roles in plays and movies. ※Zappai, Yanagi Taru-Hachihachi (1825), "The glare of a second-rate actor is the enemy of his wife." ③ By extension, a handsome man. A gentle man. ※Mandan Yomihon (1932), Something called a "setsugeki" (a play by Otsuji Shiro ) , "He has the appearance of a stretched-out version of Uzaemon, <omitted> First of all, he is a handsome man." ④ A prostitute with the second highest income. ※From the humorous book Kokei Sansho (1787): "The prostitute who eats and the second-rate prostitute are the worst of the three ."⑤ In sumo rankings, the second rank, such as maegashira, juryo, or makushita.

〘名〙① 枚数が二番目に当たること。また、そのもの。※絵本戯場年中鑑（1803）下「是は立役の二枚目三まい目と位をあらそふことあり」② (江戸時代、劇場に掲げられた看板の二番目に名がしるされたところからいう) 曾我十郎・紙屋治兵衛のようにやさしいしぐさとことばをつかい、恋愛葛藤を主として演ずる美男役。また、演劇、映画などで美男役をする者。※雑俳・柳多留‐八八（1825）「二まい目の睨が娵の敵なり」③ 転じて、美男。やさおとこ。※まんだん読本（1932）節劇と云ふもの〈大辻司郎〉「羽左衛門を引延ばした様な面影がある、〈略〉先づ以て、色男二枚目(にマイメ)であらふ」④ かせぎ高第二位の遊女。※洒落本・古契三娼（1787）「おしょくの女郎と二まいめの女郎とは、どこのうちでも中(なか)のわるいものさ」⑤ 相撲の番付で、前頭・十両・幕下などの、二番目にあたる位置。筆頭の次位。
