A kingdom that developed in the midstream of the Mekong River in Indochina from the 14th to 18th centuries. It was ruled by a monarchical ideology that combined the ancient political system of the Lao people with Theravada Buddhism. Lan Xang means "a million elephants." It is divided into the unified Lan Xang period (around 1354-1710) and the Three Kingdoms period (until 1779). The Lao, a branch of the Thai people in the broad sense, were the main ethnic group, but the kingdom also incorporated Thai people such as the neighboring Buddhist Puan people, as well as indigenous South Asian peoples (Kham, Kuy, Lobeng, etc.).
