Virtual work is the work done by the forces acting on a mechanical system when each mass point in the system is subjected to a virtual displacement. For example, in a system of n mass points, when each mass point is subjected to a virtual displacement δ r _i ＝(δ x _i , δ y _i , δ z _i ), the work done by the force F _i ＝( X _i , Y _i , Z _i ) acting on each mass point is virtual work, where i = 1, 2, ..., n .
When a mass system is described in generalized coordinates q ₁ , q ₂ , ..., q _m , the virtual work when a virtual displacement δ q _j ( j = 1, 2, ..., m ) is given is
If Q _j is expressed as a general force, then Q j is called a general force.
