A city in central Mie Prefecture. Established as a city in 1889. Prefectural capital. Facing Ise Bay, it occupies the area of the Ano River and Kumozu River basins in the Ise Plain, and includes the eastern part of the Nunobiki Mountains. The Kisei Main Line, Meisho Line, Kintetsu Nagoya Line, Osaka Line, and Ise Expressway pass through the city, and the Ise Railway Line branches off here. Before World War II, the textile industry was the main industry, but after the war, machinery, electrical equipment, and transportation equipment industries were established, and wholesale and other commercial activities are also active. There is Mie University, the former home of Kotosuga Tanigawa (historic site), a prefectural museum, and an art museum. The surrounding area produces rice (Ichishi rice) and vegetables, and seaweed is cultivated on the bay coast. Ishinden in the north developed as a temple town and temple town for Senshuji Temple.
