A port town. Also, it generally refers to an area where many people gather. In ancient times, Satsuma Bonotsu, Chikuzen Hakatatsu, and Ise Anotsu were called Sanka no Tsu, and in the Edo period, Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo were called Sanka no Tsu. *Hyōbanki Yoshiwara Yōbunsho (1661-73), 53: “Yamashiro no Kuni, Awatakuchi to yaran no (abbreviated) Tsu, I was placed there.” *Haikai Oku no Hosomichi (c. 1693-94), Tsuruga: “On the 14th, at dusk, I sought lodging at Tsuruga no Tsu.” [2] A place name in the central part of Mie Prefecture. It is the prefectural capital. It faces Ise Bay and occupies the center of the Ise Plain. Until the Middle Ages, it was counted as one of the three major ports of Japan, and during the Muromachi period, it prospered through trade with Ming China. During the Edo period, it prospered as a castle town of 320,000 koku for the Todo clan, and as a post town on the Ise (Sangu) Kaido, at the junction of the Ise-betsu Kaido and Iga Kaido. It is home to Senjuji Temple, the head temple of the Takada branch of Shinshu Buddhism. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Its former name was Anotsu (Anotsu).
