1758‐1818 (8th year of the Horeki era‐1st year of the Bunsei era) A representative Nembutsu practitioner of the Jodo sect in the mid-Edo period. Born in Shiga Village, Hidaka County, Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture). Familiar with Nembutsu from an early age, he became a monk at the age of 27 in 1784 (Tenmei 4) under Daien of Ojo-ji Temple (present-day Gobo City). He practiced Nembutsu practices such as Beji Nembutsu and Jinja Nembutsu, and is said to have mastered the innermost meaning of Buddhism without learning how to read and write. In response to an invitation from the lord of Kishu, he took up residence in a hermitage at Arita-san, but traveled to Settsu and Kawachi to spread Nembutsu and gain the devotion of many people. In 1803 (Kyowa 3), at the age of 46, he changed his strange appearance of long hair and long nails at Shishigatani Honen-in Temple in Kyoto and shaved his hair.
