A general term for mammals of the Abrocomidae family of rodents. They resemble a field vole in appearance, but have fur that is somewhat similar to that of a chinchilla. There are the Japanese chinchilla Abrocoma bennetti and the rock chinchilla A. cinerea . They are found in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. They are 15-25 cm long, 6-18 cm long, and weigh 200-300 g. They have a stocky, round body and short limbs with four toes on the front feet and five on the back feet. 齧歯(げつし)目チンチラネズミ科Abrocomidaeの哺乳類の総称。外形はハタネズミに似るが,チンチラにやや似た毛質を備えている。チリチンチラネズミ(ヤブチンチラネズミ)Abrocoma bennettiとイワチンチラネズミA.cinereaがある。ペルー,ボリビア,チリ,アルゼンチンのアンデス山地に分布。体長15~25cm,尾長6~18cm,体重200~300g。体はずんぐりと丸く,四肢が短く,前足に4指,後足に5指がある。
