A general term for mammals of the Abrocomidae family of rodents. They resemble a field vole in appearance, but have fur that is somewhat similar to that of a chinchilla. There are the Japanese chinchilla Abrocoma bennetti and the rock chinchilla A. cinerea . They are found in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. They are 15-25 cm long, 6-18 cm long, and weigh 200-300 g. They have a stocky, round body and short limbs with four toes on the front feet and five on the back feet.
