The Taiko land survey and subsequent land surveys in the early Edo period determined village boundaries and established village limits. At the same time, the previously complicated relationship between settlements and cultivated land was reorganized, and cultivated land was concentrated around settlements. This established villages as administrative units that made the murauke system possible. When demarcating villages, various elements of productive communities, such as irrigation water and common rights to mountains and fields that had existed since the Middle Ages, were taken into consideration, so there were various types of villages, including those made up of a single settlement and those made up of multiple settlements over a wide area. When demarcating villages, the arrangement of cultivated land was not thoroughly carried out, which led to border disputes.

太閤検地およびそれに続く江戸時代初期の検地によって，村の境界を定め，村落の範囲を確定すること。同時に，それまで錯綜していた集落と耕地の関係を整理し，耕地を集落周辺に集中させた。これによって村請制を可能とする行政単位としての村落が成立した。村切にあたっては，中世以来の用水・山野入会権など生産共同体の諸要素を考慮したため，単独集落で一村をなす村や，広い範囲にわたり，複数の集落で構成される村など様々であった。村切によっても耕地の入組整理が徹底されなかった場合，境争論のもととなった。
