[Christ and Jesus]
Generally, Christ is considered to be another name for Jesus. In fact, even in the New Testament, in some cases, such as in Paul's letters, Christ and Jesus are not distinguished from each other, and ancient Roman historians (such as Tacitus and Suetonius) often thought of Christ as a proper noun. However, "Christ" was originally a common noun, meaning "the anointed one." Specifically, it meant the person who was anointed by the prophets of Israel in the Old Testament and enthroned, that is, "king."

　一般にキリストはイエスの別名のように考えられている。実際，新約聖書の中でもパウロの手紙などではキリストとイエスとが区別されていない場合もあるし，古代ローマの歴史家たち(タキトゥスやスエトニウスなど)は，多くの場合キリストを固有名詞と思っていた。しかし，〈キリスト〉は元来普通名詞で，〈油を注がれた者〉を意味していた。具体的に言えば，それは，旧約聖書の時代，イスラエルの預言者たちによって頭に〈油を注がれて王位についた人物〉，すなわち〈王〉を意味するものであった。
