Tainos

【history】

[Early colonial period]
Cuba was discovered in 1492 during Columbus' first voyage. Before the Spanish conquest, Cuba was inhabited by indigenous people called Ciboneyes and Tainos or Arawaks. They were in a relatively low stage of development, but were conquered by an expedition led by the Spaniard D. de Velázquez, who arrived on the island in 1511. They were almost wiped out by the Spanish and suffered ill-treatment by them and the diseases they brought with them, and were almost wiped out about a century later. The Spanish colony of Cuba prospered for a time due to gold mining, but as the gold dried up and the center of Spanish colonial activity shifted to Mexico and Peru on the continent, it entered a period of stagnation as early as the mid-16th century.
