Chilean saltpeter - nitratine

Chilean saltpeter - nitratine

One of the most common nitrate minerals. It grows as a film on the soil surface in dry climate regions and is used as a fertilizer. As its name suggests, there are large deposits in Chile, South America, where minerals such as copper, chromium, and iodine are sometimes present as secondary components. Although there have been no reports of euhedral formations, its atomic arrangement is the same as that of calcite. In Japan, it is known to grow in small amounts on the surface of tuff (Oya stone) in Oya, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, in places not exposed to rainwater.
