A resort town in the province of Rome, Lazio, in central-west Italy. It is located about 21 km southeast of Rome, on the Albano Hills (322 m). The northwestern slope of the Albano Volcanic Group has been used as a villa area since ancient Roman times, and was part of the Papal States in the Middle Ages. The famous villas include the Villa Aldobrandini palace and nymph statue, built between 1598 and 1603. Other notable villas include Mondragone and Falconieri, built in the 16th century, and Torlonia, built in the 17th century. In the surrounding rural areas, grape cultivation is thriving, taking advantage of the fertile volcanic ash soil, and the town is known for the Frascati brand of wine.
