A post town on the Nakasen Road in Chikuma County, Shinano Province. It is part of Narakawa Village (now Shiojiri City) in Nagano Prefecture. It is located at the northern foot of Torii Pass, a difficult spot on the Kiso Kaido (part of the Nakasendo), and is the highest post town on the Nakasendo. In the Middle Ages, Narai Castle was built here. It was designated a post station in 1601, and in the late Edo period, the town was 8 cho 5 ken long and had 409 houses, including main inns, side inns, wholesalers, inns, teahouses, and woodworking businesses such as woodworkers, lacquerware shops, and comb shops (Yadomura Daigaicho).
