Japanese: 奈良井 - ならい

A post town on the Nakasen Road in Chikuma County, Shinano Province. It is part of Narakawa Village (now Shiojiri City) in Nagano Prefecture. It is located at the northern foot of Torii Pass, a difficult spot on the Kiso Kaido (part of the Nakasendo), and is the highest post town on the Nakasendo. In the Middle Ages, Narai Castle was built here. It was designated a post station in 1601, and in the late Edo period, the town was 8 cho 5 ken long and had 409 houses, including main inns, side inns, wholesalers, inns, teahouses, and woodworking businesses such as woodworkers, lacquerware shops, and comb shops (Yadomura Daigaicho). It retains the appearance of the townscape from the post station era and is designated as a national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.

信濃国筑摩(ちくま)郡の中山(なかせん)道の宿場町。長野県楢川(ならかわ)村（現・塩尻市）に属する。木曾(きそ)街道（中山道の一部）の難所鳥居(とりい)峠の北麓に位置し，中山道の中で最高所の宿。中世には奈良井城が築かれていた。1601年宿駅に指定され，江戸時代後期の町の長さ８町５間，家数409軒で，本陣・脇本陣・問屋・旅籠・茶屋などのほか，木地屋・塗器屋・櫛屋などの木材加工業者を包含していた（《宿村大概帳》）。宿場時代の町並の面影をとどめ，国の伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されている。
