Kume Incident

Japanese: 久米事件 - くめじけん

The Historical Society Journal (October-December 1891 issue), which published an article by Kume Kunitake, professor at Imperial University and member of the history compilation committee, entitled "Shinto is the ancient custom of worshiping the gods," and the magazine Shikai (January 25, 1892 issue), which reprinted the same article, were banned from sale and distribution on March 5, 1892 (Meiji 25), and Kume was ordered to step down from his position on March 4, the day before. Along with Shigeno Yasutsugu, Kume was a central figure in the history editing work at the Dajokan Shushikan, and worked hard to establish modern historiography based on the collection and criticism of historical materials, and he also had a deep interest in Western historiography.

帝国大学教授で史誌編纂委員だった久米邦武の論文〈神道は祭天の古俗〉を掲載した〈《史学会雑誌》〉(1891年10‐12月号)と，同論文を転載した〈《史海》〉(1892年1月25日号)が，1892年(明治25)3月5日に発売頒布禁止の処分を受け，また久米が前日の3月4日に非職を命ぜられた事件。　久米は重野安繹とならんで太政官修史館における修史事業の中心的人物であり，史料収集と史料批判を基礎とした近代史学の確立のために努力し，欧米史学にも深い関心を寄せていた。
