Madame Butterfly

Madame Butterfly

An opera by Italian composer Puccini. Two acts. It premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1904. Based on the novel of the same name (1897) by John Luther Long, which was adapted into a play by David Belasco (first performed in New York in 1900), Luigi Ilica and Giuseppe Giacosa wrote the Italian libretto. The story is set in Nagasaki in the same era, and is a tragic international marriage. A naval officer, Pinkerton, marries a geisha named Chocho-san despite the objections of those around him, and leaves her and their child behind to return to the United States. Three years later, Pinkerton appears with his wife in front of Chocho-san, who is waiting for him, and offers to take care of the child. Her pride is hurt, and she commits suicide. It is a so-called prima donna opera, with the female protagonist's singing (such as the aria "One Fine Day") as the main focus of the opera, and singers are required to have high levels of skill and physical strength. In order to create an exotic atmosphere, many Japanese folk songs and nursery rhymes are quoted, but these are blended with Puccini's unique style to create a mature work. The work was first performed in Japan in 1921 (Taisho 10) by a Russian opera company that visited Japan. The first Japanese performance was in 1930 (Showa 5) at the Tokyo Theater by the Japan Opera Association.
