Swedish explorer and geographer. Baron. His name was Nils Adolf Eric. He explored the Svalbard Islands in the Arctic Ocean several times. Aiming to open the Northeast Passage, he set out on the Vega in 1878, entered the Bering Sea in 1879, and returned to Japan in 1880 via Japan and China. He was also famous for his research on old maps. His son Nils Erland Herbert (1877-1932) was an ethnologist who explored South America and became a professor at Gothenburg University in 1914. His nephew Otto (1869-1928) was also a geographer who explored Patagonia, Alaska, and other places, and was the leader of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition from 1901 to 1903.
