...D. Livingstone also played a pioneering role in the exploration of the Nile and Congo river systems. Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile, was discovered by John Hanning Speke in 1862, and the Congo River system was discovered by H. Stanley's voyage down the entire course in 1876-77. All explorers made sure to report on the people and society of the lands they explored, which became the basis for Europeans' understanding of Africans.
