Humans have lived in the present-day city area since prehistoric times, and it came under the control of the Roman Empire at the end of the 1st century AD. A military camp with baths was established around the hill where the cathedral stands today. It was soon abandoned when the border defense line Limes was built, and the military city of Nida was built to the north. In the mid-3rd century, the Alamanni invaded, but in the early 6th century, King Clovis of the Franks drove them south, and the area along the river became the center of royal administration of the Rhine-Main basin. …
