Korean Garrison Army

Japanese: 朝鮮駐劄軍 - ちょうせんちゅうさつぐん
Korean Garrison Army
The Japanese Army was organized immediately after the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War and was stationed in Korea throughout Japan's colonial rule after the Japan-Korea Annexation. After the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Korea was concluded in 1876, Japanese army units were stationed in Korea, starting with a garrison stationed in Seoul, based on the Treaty of Chemulpo concluded after the Imo Military Uprising in 1882. The Treaty of Tianjin concluded between Japan and China in 1885, the year after the Gapsin Coup, resulted in both Japanese and Chinese forces withdrawing from Korea, but during the First Sino-Japanese War, Japanese troops were sent to Korea in large numbers, and a garrison of the embassy remained in Korea even after the war ended. Furthermore, the Japan-Russia Agreement of 1896 (Komura-Weber Memorandum) promised to keep Japanese troops stationed there to protect the telegraph lines between Seoul, Busan, Wonsan, and Gyeongbuk-do, a situation that continued until just before the Russo-Japanese War.
