Kanmon Bridge

Japanese: 関門橋 - かんもんきょう
Kanmon Bridge

This is a bridge for automobiles built over Hayatomonoseto, the narrowest part of the Kanmon Strait between Honshu and Kyushu. It connects Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, and connects the Chugoku Expressway and the Kyushu Expressway. It was planned to ease the rapidly increasing automobile traffic (about 8 million vehicles per year) through the Kanmon National Highway Tunnel, and construction began in June 1968 (Showa 43). It took five years and five months to complete and opened in November 1973. With a total length of 1,068 meters, it played a pioneering role in the construction of long bridges in Japan. With a central span of 712 meters and a girder height of 61 meters above sea level, large ships can easily pass through it. With six lanes, it can handle 80,000 vehicles per day. In the year after opening, 3.92 million vehicles passed through it, and as of 2010, it is about 40,000 vehicles per day. There are parking areas at Dannoura on the Shimonoseki side and Mekari on the Moji side, from which you can enjoy views of the bridge and the strait.
