Minamiyamashiro [village] - Minamiyamashiro

Japanese: 南山城[村] - みなみやましろ

A village in Soraku County, on the southeastern edge of Kyoto Prefecture. Population 4,024 (1995). Located in the eastern part of the Kasagi Mountains, most of the village area is mountainous. The Iga River, which flows west from the Iga Basin, and the Nabari River, which flows north through the Yamato Plateau, join at Yumegenkyo Gorge in the center to become the Kizu River, which flows west and enters Kasagi Town. In early modern times, it was part of the Yamato Yagyu Domain, and Kitaokawara was a distribution center for goods transported by boat on the Kizu River, and the highway connecting Kyoto and Iga also passed through it. Dosenbo in the northern plateau was uninhabited mountain and field during the Edo period, but in the early Meiji period, Kyoto Prefecture developed the area as a samurai employment program, and tea and tomatoes were cultivated there.

京都府南東端，相楽郡の村。人口4024(1995)。笠置山地の東部に位置し，村域の大半が山地である。伊賀盆地から西流してきた伊賀川と，大和高原を北流してきた名張川が，中央部の夢絃峡で合して木津川となり，西流して笠置町に入る。近世は大和柳生藩領で，北大河原は木津川舟運の物資集散地であり，京と伊賀を結ぶ街道も通じていた。北部高原の童仙房（どうせんぼう）は江戸時代は無住の山野であったが，明治初年京都府が士族授産事業として開拓，茶やトマトの栽培が行われる。
