Korean intellectual and scholar. His pen name was Shunso and his pen name was Weam. He was born in Sangju, Gyeongsang Province. He passed the Jinshi examination in 1894 (the 32nd year of the reign of King Gojong). In 1899 he became editor-in-chief of the Hwangseong Shinmun. He then established the Gwangmunsa and published Jeong Yak-yong's Mokminsimse and other works. In 1902 he became president of the Hwangseong Shinmun, and in November 1904 published an editorial entitled "On this day, we shall cry out loud," exposing the fact that the Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty had been concluded under Japanese coercion, for which he was imprisoned by Japanese authorities. In 1906 he participated in the founding of the Daehan Jigyohoe (Daehan Jigyoho), and launched a patriotic enlightenment movement. After the Japan-Korea Annexation in 1910, he devoted himself to historical research, publishing The Origin of Korean Confucianism (1917).

朝鮮の言論人,学者。字は舜韶,号は韋庵。慶尚道尚州の生れ。高宗32年(1894)進士に及第。1899年《皇城新聞》主筆。ついで広文社を設立し丁若鏞の《牧民心書》等を刊行。1902年《皇城新聞》社長となり,04年11月〈是の日や放声大哭す〉という社説を掲げ,日韓保護条約の締結が日本の強要によることを暴露して日本官憲によって投獄された。06年大韓自強会の設立に参加し愛国啓蒙運動を展開した。10年の日韓併合後は《朝鮮儒教淵源》を発表(1917)するなど歴史研究に従事した。
