A general term for sudden, severe pain in the stomach area. 胃のあたりの発作的な激痛の総称。胃そのものの痙攣は実際にはほとんど存在せず，普通は胆石症，急性胃炎，胃・十二指腸潰瘍(かいよう)，急性腸炎，ヒステリー，薬物中毒，膵炎等による上腹部の発作的疼痛(とうつう)を意味する。過食後やアルコール過飲後に起こることが多い。治療は発作時には鎮痙(ちんけい)剤で痛みを止めるとともに，真の疾患を診断し，それに対して行う。
