...When the multi-screen method was first developed, it made a great impression as it freed film from the conventional notion of a single screen and heralded a future cinematic format in which the most complex and advanced temporal and spatial montages would be possible by dynamically utilizing multiple screens, and it was soon adopted as a technique in commercial theatrical films. However, in the end it was merely a method of dividing a single screen into two or three, and multi-screen in this sense had already been attempted in the silent film era, in films such as Abel Gance's Napoleon (1927).
