…During this time, he achieved great success by developing a method for staining vital tissue with methylene blue and for staining tuberculosis bacteria, and further studied immune phenomena, proposing the side-chain theory, which theorized the antigen-antibody reaction. This side-chain theory is called Ehrlich's side-chain theory, and for this achievement he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908 together with E. Metchnikoff. He also devoted himself to discovering chemical substances effective against pathogens, and in 1904, together with Shiga Kiyoshi, he discovered Trypan Red, which is effective against Trypanosoma, and in 1910, together with Hata Sahachiro, he discovered Salvarsan, which is effective against Treponema, the pathogen of syphilis, and became the founder of chemotherapy. …
