…In accordance with the principle that “a theater should have its own affiliated theater company,” the New Theater Company was founded in the same year, 1924, as an affiliated theater company of the Tsukiji Little Theater, led by Osanai Kaoru and Hijikata Yoshi, with the flag of non-commercialism and pure artistic principles. Based at the newly built Tsukiji Little Theater, Osanai, Hijikata, Shiomi Hiroshi, Tomoda Kyosuke, Wada Sei, and Asari Tsuruo became a member (Aoyama Sugisaku joined a month later). For their first performance, they performed R. Goering's expressionist play “The Naval Battle” and other plays, giving a strong shock and fresh impression to the audience. With the motto of “Theatrical laboratory, permanent theater of new theater, people's theater,” they performed 117 domestic and foreign plays in a continuous experimental and research-based manner over a period of five years, developing a full-scale new theater movement and becoming the origin of the modern new theater movement. …
