A port city on the west coast of Sabah, an island in Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. Formerly known as Jesselton, it has a population of 208,000 (1991). It was built in 1899. Since replacing Sandakan as the state capital in 1946, it has seen remarkable economic growth, and its port handles the largest amount of cargo in the state. A branch of the National University of Malaysia was opened here, making it an educational and cultural center. The modern city stretches from north to south on reclaimed coastal land, and was built after World War II. A new mosque was built in the government district to the south, symbolizing the increase in the Muslim Malay population. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
