Also known as an HI region. A region in the galaxy where neutral hydrogen exists. It fills almost the entire galaxy, but there are a few more on the outer edge along the spiral arms. If there is a hot, shining star in a neutral hydrogen region, the neutral hydrogen is ionized, and an ionized region is formed around the star. HI領域とも。銀河において中性水素の存在する領域。銀河系ではほとんどまんべんなく埋め尽くしているが,渦状腕に沿って外縁部にやや多く存在。中性水素領域の中に高温の輝く星があると,中性水素が電離されて,星の周囲には電離領域が形成される。これは電離水素領域またはHII領域と呼ばれ,いわゆる散光星雲として認められる。
