〘Noun〙① A general term for quicklime (calcium oxide) obtained by burning limestone or shells, weathered lime that is powdered by exposing it to air, and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) that is powdered by adding water and heating it. Since ancient times, it has been used for disinfection, fertilizer, plaster , etc. Sesquiole. [10-volume Wamyosho (around 934)]② An inferior type of liquor that uses ① as a preservative. It is no longer found today.

せっ‐かい セキクヮイ【石灰】

〘名〙 生石灰(酸化カルシウム)、または、消石灰(水酸化カルシウム)のこと。石灰石(炭酸カルシウム)を含めることもある。いしばい。※尺素往来(1439‐64)「地黄。鹿茸。石灰。硫黄并甘葛等の和薬者」 〔後漢書‐楊璇伝〕
