Chujin - Loyalty
Year of death: 14th October 1138 (18th November 1138)
Year of birth: 1065
A Tendai Buddhist monk in the late Heian period. Son of Tosa no Kami Minamoto no Tadasue. Early in the Joho era (1074-77), he became a monk at Mount Hiei and studied under Kakujin, Chogo, and Ryosuke. He rose to prominence as he served as a lecturer and leader at many ceremonies held by the Imperial Court, Imperial Court officials, and aristocrats. In 1130, he became the 46th head priest of Tendai, and in February of the following year, he presented the Enryakuji Kisho Rokukajoji (included in Chono Gunzai 3) to the temple's followers, warning them against seeking fame without substance. In 1137, he became Daisozu. There are many books that are said to have been selected by Chujin, but many, including the Kanko Ruiju, have been borrowed by later generations. <References> Okubo Ryojun, "Kanko Ruiju" (Commentary on "Tendai Hongakuron," Volume 9 of the Nihon Shiso Taikei)
