A former town in Tsuna District, Hyogo Prefecture, facing the Akashi Strait at the northern tip of Awaji Island. Blessed with good fishing grounds, the town is known for its sardines, clams, wakame seaweed, and Akashi sea bream, and is also active in aquaculture and seafood processing. The main settlement is the fishing port town of Iwaya, which has ferry boats to Akashi City, and the area around Matsuho-no-ura at the northern end belongs to the Setonaikai National Park.
