A notational symbol that defines the relationship between the position of a note on the staff and the pitch of the note. In the staff notation, there are the treble clef, bass clef, and C clef, and the lines that coincide with the center of each symbol on the staff represent G, F, and C, respectively. In the West, clefs began to be used around the 11th century, with the letters F, which corresponds to the current bass clef, and C, which corresponds to the current C clef. In the 15th century, as the range of notes used in music expanded with the development of polyphony music, the G clef, which corresponds to the current treble clef, began to be used. In the 18th century, the custom of placing the F clef on the left hand and the G clef on the right hand in keyboard music developed, and as a result, the F clef = bass clef came to be called the bass clef, and the G clef = treble clef came to be called the treble clef. The C clef (C clef) is currently used as the alto clef for the viola and the tenor clef for the cello and tenor trombone.
