A painter of the Bolognese School in Italy. He first studied at the art school of Denis Calvert (Dionisio Fiamingo) from Flanders, but around 1595 he moved to the art school of R. Carracci, where he broke away from Calvert's late Mannerist influence. In 1601 he visited Rome with Francesco Albano, where he learned not only Carracci's classicism, but also Caravaggio's dramatic expression of light and shadow. However, after visiting Rome again in 1607, he broke away from Caravaggio's influence and strengthened his classical character. In Rome, he was given many artistic opportunities by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. His Aurora (1613-14, now Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi), which decorates the ceiling of the cardinal's Casino (villa), is one of the masterpieces of this period. Shortly after completing this work, he returned to Bologna, and from then on, apart from short visits to Naples in 1922 and Rome in 1925, he spent most of his time in Bologna and dominated the local school of painting.
