A Jewish legal scholar from the 5th to 4th centuries BCE. During the reign of Persian King Artaxerxes I (or II), he returned to Jerusalem from exile in Babylonia, rebuilt the temple (known as the Second Temple), and preached the Law to the people, thus establishing the foundations of legal Judaism. 前5~4世紀のユダヤ教律法学者。ペルシア王アルタクセルクセス1世 (または2世) のとき,捕囚地バビロニアからエルサレムに帰って神殿 (いわゆる第2神殿) を再建するとともに,律法を民衆に説きその教化にあたり,律法的ユダヤ教の基礎を確立。その活動は『ネヘミヤ記』『エズラ記』に記されている。
